COVID-19 vaccine

The Indian government has launched a historic vaccination drive against the novel Coronavirus earlier on January 16 this year. It’s been over four months since the drive was started. So far, India has administered more than 200 million doses of the vaccine, only next to the United States.

Talking to Twitter, the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare said, India had crossed the 200-million-mark in vaccine numbers in 130 days, making it the only country after the United States.

Comparing the data in India and the United States, the Union Ministry said, the superpower nation reached the 200 million mark in 124, while India achieved the huge milestone in 130 days.

After the US and India, the United Kingdom(61 million in 168 days), Brazil(59 million in 128 days) Germany(45 million), France(33 million), and Italy(31 million doses). The last three countries took 149 days for the record.

“As per the latest available data with the Union Health Ministry, over 34 percent [of the] population above 45 years has received at least 1st dose of COVID-19 vaccine in India till date. Similarly, over 42 percent of 60+ years of population in India has received at least 1st dose of COVID-19 vaccine,” the ministry said on Wednesday.

Looking at the vaccinations in the country, currently, three vaccines are being used. Covishield, Covaxin and Sputnik V of Pune-based Serum Institute of India, Hyderabad-based Bharat Biotech, and Russians state made respectively are currently used. However, the Russian vaccine is used in small numbers.

The Indian government is in talks with the Pharma giants in other countries to procure vaccine doses and more doses are expected to reach India soon.
